Slippery Elm: It's History and Unknown Future....
Slippery Elm is an amazing tree but today it is considered "at risk" for extinction. There are a few reasons why this is happening but each of us can also learn how to prevent/ slow it down.
A little history first. Slippery elm contributed to the European settler’s ability to survive during migrations. It is reported that soldiers of the Revolutionary War in 1776 relied on it for food and medicine and that George Washington’s Continental Army, during the harsh winter of 1777-1778 at Valley Forge, also used it as a food and medicine. One of the most remarkable episodes in the history of the United States’ was the great western migration of the Mormon Pioneers. It began in 1846 in Illinois, then through Iowa and Nebraska and eventually to the Rocky Mountains.
